Our Mini Maroons teachers plan age and developmentally
appropriate lessons that can range from an art project to
a learning style game to sensory activities. Preschoolers
will have at least 1 lesson activity with each group of
teachers every day. Twice throughout their time with us,
we do sit down for snack time. Between lessons and
snack, it's free play!
While structured lessons are important, I believe free
play is just as important. With the 3-5 age group, free
play is learning as well. They may play with other
preschoolers or even the teachers! This is where they learn
to cooperate with others, expand their imaginations, find
their limits, even conflict resolution in a controlled setting
where there are teachers around to assist and guide as
needed.
What will my preschooler do?
As of April 2024, we usually have at
least 12 teachers in the preschool room,
in addition to Mrs. Smith, the teacher of
Adv and Childhood Education classes.
This means we can have at least a 1:1
ratio, which is plenty for every Mini
Maroon to get attention as needed for
lessons or play!
How many teachers are there?
Our Mini Maroons teachers are high school students, sophomores and older, who enroll in our Childhood Education program. These students have a special interest in the preschool age group and/or pursuing a career in education. Throughout the school year, they focus on creating engaging and fun lessons, learn teacher professionalism and get real first hand experience and understanding of the 3-5 yr old development.

Mrs. Smith
Contact Information
Mrs. Smith has been at Elgin High School since Sept 2018. She has been teaching the child education classes since Oct 2021. She has 3 children of her own, and has previous experience working with children in both job and volunteer settings. Teaching the Childhood Education program lets Mrs. Smith have the best of both worlds - teenagers learning about themselves and keeping their child side, and preschoolers who are learning, exploring and developing every single day.
